Usually only the eggs of a katydid are able to survive the winter although in tropical areas some adult species are able to live for several years. It will shed its skin several times as it becomes an adult. Species in tropical climates can live for several years and may produce two generations annually with overlap among various life stages. They are known for the loud sounds they make.
They are bright green in color. Species of katydids that inhabit areas with distinct seasons typically live for less than a year and produce one generation of offspring the eggs being the only life stage capable of surviving winter. Katydids are most often found in the treetops where there are many leaves. The life of a katydid is usually a short one most live for only about a year or less.
This is their natural camouflage as it helps them blend into plants and leaves. Males provide sperm to the females who lay about 20 eggs in their chosen protected spots. Most female katydids lay eggs only one time near the end of summer.
